Glen Ireland
Glen has over 34 years’ experience in advising mining companies, financial institutions, governments and other stakeholders on significant mining projects and transactions. He is recognised as one of the world’s leading advisors to the mining industry, he has extensive experience in successfully negotiating complex multi-party joint ventures, as well as mining concessions and similar agreements between the private and public sectors for world-class mining projects.
Over the course of his career, Glen has chaired the global mining and metals practice at two major international law firms including, most recently, the market-leading Mining & Metals Group of Latham & Watkins LLP.
He has worked in over 30 countries, including Mongolia, Ethiopia, Greenland, Canada, Iraq, Brazil, Peru, Paraguay, Republic of Guinea, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Ghana, Morocco, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Malaysia, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia. He has advised on projects and transactions with a combined value in excess of US$ 60 billion.
Glen’s experience in the metals and mining space includes advising Emirates Aluminium on its US$15 billion merger with Dubai Aluminium to form Emirates Global Aluminium, Norsk Hydro on its US$ 5 billion acquisition of Vale’s aluminium value chain interests in Brazil and advising on shareholder / commercial arrangements surrounding the proposed SALCO aluminium smelter in Sarawak, Malaysia. Mostly recently, Glen has co-led (alongside Mark Aplin) advisory work for Turquoise Hill Resources, the majority owner of Oyu Tolgoi, the largest mine development project in the world.
He has a reputation for integrity and fair dealing, and has often acted in the capacity of “honest broker” to resolve complex joint venture and commercial disputes.
